Welcome

Kolkata played a major role in the history of Electron Microscopy in India. The first EM in Asia was built in Kolkata by legendary Prof. N. N. Dasgupta. The first cryo-EM structure(s) of any biological entity from India was published by Dr. A. N. Ghosh, who is a direct disciple of Prof. N. N. Dasgupta. In recent years, the importance of understanding a biological phenomenon in atomic details have received enormous impetus. This stems not only due to the fact that structural biology helps understand a problem at highest resolution, but also due to the fact that only structural studies can lead to identification of allosteric sites in adequate details as orthosteric sites are being saturated for drug design. India harbors a large number of investigators who wish to understand biology at a resolution that goes beyond the classical biochemical, biophysical, spectroscopic or light microscopic tools. Since the resolution revolution of CryoEM, researchers in India felt an insatiable desire to be able to incorporate this truly revolutionary technique in addressing many aspects of their ongoing-research themes that posit their research to newer possibilities and help them answer many key questions that would otherwise be impossible to resolve. This meeting brings together experts from this country and from around the globe who are front runners in the field. It aims to bring the recent developments in the field to the community; to make the community realize the scopes and practical considerations of undertaking relevant projects; and most importantly to entice the next generation of researchers to delve into the field to address their choicest problems.
